Hi John: My suggestion is to query a safety supply company(ies)which sells cartidges for various applications to determine the best one to use. you may be right about the gas mask cartidge capabilities--I don't know. I assume your mask is a full face unit, which in itself is much better than the half-face units, providing you can get suitable cartridges for it. You must also consider being hairless on the face, to get a proper seal, otherwise the beard is the filter, and hasn't been certified for performance.
