Each of those pieces is about 3 board feet, so that works out to about a dollar a board foot. (Are we talking Canadian $ here? If so, it is even cheaper in U.S. $) You may get a lot of waste, but at this price, you are still way ahead moneywise.

I used to see a quote from Edwin Land, of Polaroid Camera fame. Wish I could remember the exact words, but The jist of it was that every problem can be solved using just the tools and materials one already has at hand. the concept seems to have been proven in your case.

The accents will come from one 16' clear redwood board and

If you have some ash left over it makes a nice core for a paddle handle. Let it run the length of the paddle, sandwiched between strips of cedar. If you make the blades with the same cedar, ash and redwood that you use for the kayak, they'll match.
