A blade on a stick sounds scary to me. Suggest a "bastard" rasp, duct taped to a long dowel of some kind with the rounded side presented. I used that kind of rasp to quickly reduce my end pour when it heated up and boiled over the top on my Coho. luckily I had not yet put the deck on ( I dont follow directions very well) and I could file it down with the rasp.
