: hello everyone!
: well...it happened. i'm not finished w/ my current project and i'm already
: looking into building a s.o.f. walrus. i've read about others here on the
: bbs that have fallen into the same catch 22 situation as i ( by catch 22 i
: mean i want to build it; and, if i do, mrs hitman will be upset). anyway,
: i've started by reading thru g. putz book on s.o.f.. can i get everything
: i need from the offsets there in the book? or must i send away to some sof
: company? i noticed that the lenght was discussed numerous times, but i
: didn't see reference to any beam measurement. i thought i go to the bbs
: because it seems that everyone here as built such a craft at one time or
: another.

: i remember that mike hanks built a nice one(s), as well as roger nuffer.
: rehd, didn't you build one as well? i also remember mike saying that he
: did modifications to the original plans. what they were i can't remember
: right off hand.

: the past few walrus's that i've seen here all used canvas duck, with
: exception to mike's plywood rig for his borther. has anyone used dacron?
: it would seem that this would be the cat's meow. although, admittedly,
: i've no idea what the stuff costs.

: i know i've rambled a bit here, but i would appreciate it if someone could
: maybe answer some of these poorly constructed questions.
: build on,
: brett the hitman hart

I think the beam was about 22 inches. I made a jig with poster board or something so I could draw shortened forms from the offsets in the book. I made measurements full size but picked a horizontal line something like 26 or 28 (30?) inches off the bottom and had all the forms end there. Then the forms line up nicely on a strongback.

Dacron sounds good to me. Canvas ain't so cheap either.

Definitely can't do it with Tyvek, trust me.

Maybe someone else has a light cheap skin they've used. I thought just maybe just a layer of glass pulled tight and filled but seems to defeat the benefits of a flexible frame, but it could be pretty light

Maybe one of them has built one stripper, it's been discussed but I missed whether there was any conclusion.
