: I want to share a problem I ran into with strapping tape. I've never used
: strapping tape before in boat building but it sounded like a straight
: forward deal to join hull and deck. I found a roll that was probably over
: ten years old and used it. It held just fine but after my inner glass tape
: job had cured and I went to remove the strapping tape, the plastic coating
: peeled off the adhesive and strands, leaving them stuck to the hull. I
: tried an adhesive remover which produced a slimy, gooey mess, and finally
: resorted to paint thinner, which made a thinner, sticky mess, which I was
: mostly able to remove with alcohol. I had to use acetone to finally get
: rid of it so I could do final sanding.
: I couldn't find any reference to anyone else having this problem, but hope it
: might help someone. My advise is to spring for a fresh roll of tape.

I use 3M clear packing 2" wide tape. It's as strong as strapping tape, it's cheaper, you can stretch it to load power, it's wider so it holds better and it's totally clear. Residue is not a problem. Don't buy the cheap junk, only 3M.
All the best,
