: For that double paddle canoe I am building, I would like to be able to row
: it. First, I think oars would be faster than the paddle. Second, I think
: the boat would be much easier to maneuver and control with oars for
: photography, which is one of the main uses to which the boat will be put.
: Fishing should be easier, too.
: I've been searching the web for plans or descriptions of some sort of light,
: removable setup for moving the oarlocks out about nine inches on each
: side. My search hasn't produced much. Has anyone done something like this
: or know where I might look to get some information on this? I've seen a
: couple of clunky looking (and expensive) commercial units, but I would
: rather make my own.
: Thanks for your help.

Not sure if it will work but stuck an url in for page in Boundary Waters Catalog
which has something you may want to look at. If the link fails go to
their web site www.piragis.com and browse. It looks like it could be easily reproduced in ash. Figure you will do some steaming and laminating.
I also saw an old wood-canvas boat in New Hampshire which appeared to be a typical Old Town or similar with a stern transom. This canoe was truncated into a row boat style, but with tapering sealed sponsons built out of wood and canvas along the gunnels and sort of tear drop in cross section to blend into sides of the boat. The oarlocks were in the outboard edge of an 8 inch board across the top of the sponson tube and attached to the gunnels. The sponsons or tubes provides additional stability, positve flotation and an additional 16 inches of width at the oarlocks. Not detachable however.
