That's only cause I was working at the time. :)

When cutting thin items I set the fence to cut whatever I'm wanting. It's easier that way. I never use a finger board, just feed with the right hand, pressure the material against the fence with the left and keep pressure down on the material at the same time. When you approach the table with the trailing end of the board reach over to the right side of the fence, where you have conveniently placed your push stick, and pick it up to finish the cut. I use 5/8" particle board for my pushsticks in the shape of a shoe, where the shoe rests on the wood and the heel catches the back of the board. I like this better than a stick because it gives you more control over the workpiece. You can keep it down on the table better and my hands NEVER come within 3" of the blade. If you are using a fingerboard, you can't keep pushing the actual strip, but rather the waste side of the workpiece. That leaves the strip at the blade when the end is cut through and can possibly damage the end of the strip. I just push the shoe over the blade and on to the end of the table. You'll cut a groove in the bottom of the shoe on the first pass and then it won't be a problem after that.

I'm not recommending that you ommit the finger boards if you feel safer useing them. Most do!! I'm just saying that's the way I have always done it and it's much faster and there's nothing to do but put the wood on the table and cut. I'm all for simplicity.......... With RESPECT!!! Always pay attention, keep your mind on your work and your hands away from sharp, moving objects!!
