Ive done this, it works like a champ. I've also successfully re-used old varnish by adding thinner and pouring it through a strainer, but it is better used as an adder to linseed oil for oiled finishes. You get best results from a new can.

: I've heard you can blow a little propane gas into the jar/can as you close it
: to keep the varnish from skinning over. I haven't tried this yet.
