The Blue tarps are UV treated so that they will last longer than they used to. There's probably no way to determine how good or how durable the UV treatment is, but I would be okay with one folded in half. You could even stitch the edges and add grommets to make a double duty tarp. A simple frame from pvc can keep the tarp away from the surface, and give a shape that doesn't form duckponds.
