Good luck with it. It should be a lot of fun. I built a Chessie 14 for my daughter last spring and had a fair bit of 'help' as well!
For the record, my daughter is 12 (but about the size of an average 10 year old), and the Chessie 14 fits her fine. She rides a bit high on the water, but as we don't go on long trips or out in bad weather, it's not a problem.
She is into hiking and rock climbing so paddling isn't much of a stretch... I hope she continues to enjoy it.
