Good wood is good wood, even if it is in a crooked board. Here in Minnesota, I grab any cedar board with decent grain and not very many knots. Some may be 1 x 12's that have cracked down the center, but are a lot nicer than the straight one next in the pile full of knots. Putting a straight edge on a crooked or broken edge board, as Rehd explains, is rather simple, and something that is handy to know. Then you have a lot more viable choices at some of the "not well stocked with premium wood" lumber yards that many of us have as our only option :) .
