I never use a long fence for cutting strips. With a long fence, you need to have a very straight edge on your board. You only need to have the section of the plank straight that is at the blade. One problem with a long fence is that many boards, espicially wide ones, have a lot of tension in them which is gradually released as strips are sawed off, causing the remaining board to gradually develope a curve. When this happens, your long fence becomes either non functional or a problem, depending on which way the board warps. Just my opinion. Never had a problem keeping the strips uniform, just push the board through the saw Rehd says and do it by myself like Rob.
