Not a kayak paddle, but a comercial canoe paddle --very heavy,too. It was not quite a break but rather simply fell off right at the glue line on the blade. Balde was not glassed, just vanished.
My first wood kayak paddle was spruce. Instead of sawing the wood, I split the wood for the loom, glue/ glass the blade. It last several seasons and met it's demise when fell from the roof of my friend's car onto freeway and ran over by someone else; so I guees that does not count.
