There is an alternative to steaming which might be faster. Simply use thinner strips. If 1/4 by 3/4 strips are hard to twist, Cut a few that are 1/4 by 3/8. These are half the width and need half the bend. For really extreme transitions, go with 1/4 inch square strips. These twist easily, and since you only need to give them each 1/3rd the twist of a 3/4 inch wide piece your work goes together easily.

Cedar is so soft that you might be able to score, or split, the ends of your wood with a utility knife. Get the scoring to about a foot past the point where your twist will be, and you'll have an easier time. Go slow with the knife and keep your fingers out of range. (usual knife safety)

Unlike steaming there is no cost involved, no special equipment to set up, and since the strips are dry, your regular gluing process can be used.
