In Response To: HPLV gun and varnish (Bruce Heys)

: A friend made an offer for me to borrow his HPLV spray gun for varnishing my
: nearly complete Return. The offer caught me by surprise as I've always
: used foam or bristle brushes with reasonable success. He even offered to
: do the spraying! Does anyone have experience spray finishing their kayak?
: Pitfalls? Cautions? I have already purchased Captains varnish and hope to
: use it regardless of application technique.

If your friend knows what he's doing, I'd say " Go For It " as a sprayed finish is always much nicer than hand applied. Coats are thinner and more even. Put several coats and it'll look like glass. "IF" he knows what he's doing. If not, and you don't have the experience, I'd say probably not a good idea. You need to adjust the spray pattern, and coating pattern to keep runs out an eliminate dry spots.
