Paul is right; the ribs are compression members and subject to buckling, so slender ribs work against you. You want them to be thick, so you need something light like, oh, say, wood. I once had an idea to use epoxy soaked jute in the manner you suggest, but space it much closer together than the ribs the plan calls for.

One thing to beware of is the need for the stringers to be outside the ribs, or else they will push on the skin and slow the boat. The Kevlar is on the outside but is a flat, linear tow and doesn't show much.

I think my plan was to make a stitch and glue form with foam board, wrap it up with the saturated string, apply the stringers to the outside, and tear the form out in pieces. It got to sounding like more work than steamed ribs and Kevlar.

So how is the intreped buyer making out with the Yare?
