I just finished a paddle like that, glass tips and all.

I painted the tips with Pettit Easypoxy, and they leave marks in my varnish from the paint. Greg Stamer put up a really good post on finishes awhile back, a mix of boiled linseed oil, paint thinner, and a small amount of varnish. I'm quite happy with it.
