Actually you are right on target with that thought. I was told in Greenland that the hunting paddle, with dense fittings at the extreme ends, gives plenty of momentum to claw through gales and also smooths out the forward paddle stroke.
That said, I was more than happy to have a lightweight cedar paddle for the races!
