With Alan on this. As the spokeshave has little sole to resist the blade turning into the wood as it catches the grain the bevel has to be positioned against the wood. The face of the bevel shoube held almost parallel to the wood's surface. Think of it as a chisel. For fine materail removal you keep the chisel's bevel down to prevent the blade from digging in. Same for the spoke shave. You will notice that the bevel is up on a draw knife which is used for heavier stock removal. Hope this helps.
