Lee Valley Tools makes a glue like Elmer's with one important difference. It doesn't wick into the wood so you can stain or finish it much more easily. I used it mixed with sandings from my sanding of my red cedar. It matches up quite well and sands nicely also. Its a little thinner in consistency but will thicken right up when you add the sanding dust.
I used this glue on my decks to avoid the Elmer's look and I'm happy with the result. Now if I had just done a better job of sanding I'd be blemish free.
