Hi Bryan,
I just finished building a carbon fiber rudder system for my boat. Plans (not free) can be found here... http://www.oneoceankayaks.com/kayakrudder.htm It is extremely strong and is virtually weightless compared to other rudder systems I have seen. Vaclavs instructions are very clear with lots of online photos to show what needs to be done. It looks great on a woodstrip boat plus, it was a really fun project... highly recommended.
