You do have to loosen the tension on the cap screw, before making any large blade adjustments, otherwise it will bind up. I hold the tool upside down, loosen the cap, and hold the cap and blade with one thumb while adjusting the screws. You probably already know this from working with handplanes, but any time that you back the screws out (to lighten the cut) you should advance the screw(s) forward slightly. This takes the play out of the mechanism and prevents the setting from changing.
From what I have read, John Gunterman is very passionate about wooden spokeshaves. Be warned, if you mention your Record, I would expect that you would receive an earfull ;^)
