Like Shawn said, you probably mean polyester resin.
Polyester will work. It is not as good as epoxy for bonding and waterproofing, but it will work. If you are really strapped for $$$ and can't build a boat unless you use the cheapest stuff available, go ahead with polyester. If you are just trying to be cheap, save yourself some heartache and buy epoxy your results will be better and more pleasant. If you insist on being cheap regardless of what common wisdom says, polyester will be satisfactory for your purposes.
I know of several polyester strippers that are still going strong after 10+ years. They don't look that great, but they still work.
