Hi Brian;

The easiest way to remove an old oil finish is the same way we do for gunstocks . . . "Easy-Off" oven cleaner. Apply to the wood, let sit for 30 min or so, and then use a brush and water (and rubber gloves) to scrub it off. Towel dry it, let dry and repeat as necessary. If is not 100 years of linseed oil applied dozens of times, it will probably only take one pass.

This treatment will leave the wood virgin and ready for sanding and a new finish. I think I posted some rifle stock pics over a year ago - Easiest technique I've used . . .
