I am starting my first boat and I am trying to invest as little money as possible. As luck would have it I have a large stash of mahogany I found when a local guitar factory changed their process and needed different size wood for the new machine. They threw away all the stock they had. I couldn't see this great wood go to waste so I took it out of the dumpsters hoping a project would spring to mind. Three years (and two wicked cool Adirondack chairs) later I have decided to build a strip kayak. I have about 150 boards 2"x3"x 5' to 8' long. I own a 14" bandsaw that I intend to use for resawing and I will mill my own beads and coves. My question is: Has anyone built a kayak of mahogany? Is the wood too heavy (dense) for this project? Has anyone used a bandsaw to cut the strips? It seems a bandsaw would create less waste. Is the table saw easier? Thank you in advance for any comments and advice.
