Oh, man -- what a bummer! You're right that you'd probably have built another one, but it would have been nice to paddle and get to know your first boat so you know how you want to build your second one differently.

Check your homeowner's insurance, I think your kayak should be covered. I'd claim it was worth at least $1500, given the kit price and time invested. I have a separate boat-owners rider on my renter's insurance for my stripper, since it's kept (locked) in the rafters of my carport.

I went for a paddle yesterday, and my kayak is still on top of my car, unlocked. At least I think it's there. Maybe I need to take a quick break from work to go out and check on it...
