: rip the stock down the middle and laminate a layer of stronger wood or
: several layers of fiberglass down the center of the shaft.

To maximize strength and lightness put the fiber glass or hardwood reinforcing on they OUTSIDE of the cedar shaft. This will protect the soft cedar from nicks as well as stiffen they handle (just like fiberglass on the hull strips).
