Adding pigment to the coating applied to the boat would make it last longer in the sun and thus increase its utility. Is it a mistake to use varnish instead of paint? We use varnish instead of paint because it is pretty, not because it is better than paint. Paint is better. What is the difference between using an expensive heavy exotic wood instead of a cheap light-weight common wood, and using varnish instead of paint. You apparently feel there is a distinction between the two decisions. Isn't it just a matter of degree?
