If the curve was developed in someone's imagination, why shouldn't it be called "art". Ansel Adams, took pictures of scenes that were available for anyone to see. He made it art by saying "Stop, take a look at this." It took good craftsmanship on his part to pull it off, but a straight forward presentation of what is there can still be art.

I think building kayaks is a wonderful waste of energies. If all any of us wanted was a simple kayak, we could get one that served that purpose with much less time, money and energy by scanning the classifieds. We want something with a hard to pinpoint characteristic which makes the boat more than what we can get out of someone elses back yard. And we seek it even when other people don't recognize it or agree when they see it. I think that quality is "art".
