I think Nick's estimate in his book is 1.5 gallons. I would buy a little more, maybe 2 gal, because you waste more on your first boat. It definitely varies with brand and your experience. You will find uses for the excess, like a paddle, the 2nd boat, etc. It doesn't go bad. Good luck
