I believe artistry and craftsmanship are two seperate ability. I value both for their differences. I don't put one above the other. I think someone can be a good artist even if licking stamps is a challenge for them, and someone can be a good craftsman even if they couldn't visualize swiss cheese without the holes. Craftsmanship is a disipline of skills, precision, and patience. Artistry is an endeavour of imagination, innovation and communication. I think the best craftsmen have the abilities of an artist and the best artist have the skills of a craftsman. A skilled artist has the ability to precisely translate his vision into a physical object, although many leave the work to a craftsman. A great craftsman can create an object with qualities beyond those strictly required for the functioning of the object, but many just faithfully reproduce the designs of others.
I think it would be sad that just because someone is creating something that requires craftmanship, that he should not have access to the choice of making it artistic. I think it would be narrow minded to say that just because the object being created has a specific use that it is forever excluded from being art. Do art schools teach that you must choose a medium that can not have a practical use in order for you to ever become a real artist. I thought the only limit to art was the artist's imagination. While I may use the word "art" loosely, unless you can put a tight definition it will continue to be ued that way.
I would like to think that if someone chose to work in the medium of boat-shaped objects that they would still have the option of creating art if that is their goal. While I would be happy just becoming a better craftsman so I can make stronger/lighter/faster boats, I think that someone with aspirations of becoming an artist should have the medium of boats available as an option without being subject to insults.
: It's not art. You use the term so loosely to cover anything pretty.
: Craftsmanship has a very high meaning to me. It must not mean much to you
: since it is not enough to express the beauty of well made boat.
