: What kind of wood did you use?
: What size? How thick?--(cross sectionwise)
The Book, " Wood and Canvas Kayak Building ", by George Putz, calls for 1" x 1/2" strips for all stringers on this particular boat. It's the 18 1/2 foot model intended to be a double. Because of My size, and the size of the folks that will be getting the boat, I went with 1" x 3/4" on the stringers, chines and Gunwales and I chose to use a vertical piece 3/4" x 1 1/2" for the Keelson. It is built of white Pine ( Ponderosa I believe ), but not clear. I ended up with a couple af small knots, but saved a bunch on wood expenses using the lesser grade and cutting around most of the flaws. The 17' boat, the single, uses 3/4" x 3/8" stringers. The 1/2" and 3/8" is the thickness.
Hope that will do, and if you need more info. just ask. Most of the rest came from the book, with a couple more mods. from Paul Jacobson and myself on the forms. Let me know.
