Try 1/4 inch strips of balsa as a direct replacement for the cedar.

We know that boats built with cedar strips as thin as 1/8 th inch work well, and that 3/16 inch cedar strips are also good. I can not see any reason why 1/4 inch thick balsa would not be as good as these thinner cedar strips.

Around here balsa is very expensive. If it is cheaper than cedar by you, then go for it!
