Much better than what I thought you two were getting at with simply a slide in/out foam buildhead. I might think about making that ring particularly overbuilt so as to stiffen it up for when folks sit just behind the cockpit to reenter..

The one nice thing about hatches is that other people can open them up to get stuff while out on the water....... since I don't always have my paddle jacket in the cockpit with me.
