I had the same trouble with my Great Auk also. The first kayak I built was a Guillemot 17 and I didn't have as much trouble with the sheer strips. The problem I had with the Auk was twisting the strips from almost vertical to almost flat. I don't have any pictures, but I will tell you what I did. First cut the sheer strips narrower. That helps them twist easier. Just keep planeing them until they are close to fitting. Mine still don't look perfect, but I will fix them when I join the hull and deck. Second, use narrow strips for the first two or three strips on the deck.
I know how frustrating this can be. I quit working on my yak for about two weeks and only started back today. Finished up the deck sheer strips and two rows on the deck. Also finished up the center deck strips. Hang in, it will work out.
