Last summer I moved 2 fiberglass kayaks, 2 CLC kayaks, a fiberglassed but not completed Guillemot,the Guillemot forms on the strongback, a Wee Lassie still on the forms, a set of cut panels for a CLC North Bay and a lot of spare wood and shop equipment, from Connecticut to Maine.

I got a U-Haul truck long enough to fit the longest boat (17'-6"). I built racks inside the truck. Everything was built out of the cheapest 2x4s I could get at Home Depot and fastened with sheetrock screws. First I built two square frames the width and height of the inside of the box of the truck. I fastened these to the truck with tie-wraps. Fortunantly U-Haul trucks have two rub rails down each side of the box that the tie-wraps could fasten to. Then I added two more vertical 2x4s to each frame, about 30 inches in from the outside walls. This gave me a center aisle and two side aisles. I put cross pieces across the side aisles at appropriate heights to rest the boats on, and tied the boats down securely. The most fragile boat, the Wee Lassie, still on the forms, I put in the center bay and screwed the strongback to the bottom member of my square frames. I put a couple of nylon webbing straps around the Wee Lassies hull and strongback to keep them together. As someone else has suggested, I fastened the North Bay panels to a 2x6 and strapped the whole package down to my temporary racks. After 350 miles in the back of a truck, everything came through without a scratch.
