filling gaps

I am at the point of filling gaps before sanding. Does anyone know if I can fill with wood putty, wood filler,laquer sticks etc. and if they can be epoxied? Seems to me I can get a better colour match with these products than trying to come up with a match using sanding dust and epoxie. Any thoughts, ideas?
