CPES

There has been some discussion about Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer here before, but I don't recall whether the solvent issue has ever been aired out. I was talking to the Rot Doctor today about an unrelated matter, and he said that his CPES is 50% solvents, a proprietary blend of 14 of them. Now, I can't rattle off 14 solvents that work with epoxy, but of those I'm familiar with (xylene, toluene, MEK, MIBK, lacquer thinner, benzene, trichlorethylene, trichloroethane, IPA, vinegar) most are toxic and/or carcinogenic. Sure, the stuff penetrates deep into wood, and now we know why. Beyond the health and safety issues, there is also the question of persistence of the solvents after application, and whether they may be trapped in the wood by glassing. IMHO, 100% solids epoxies are a better bet all the way around, and System 3 Clear Sealer would be an excellent substitute. My 2 cents' worth, anyway.
