I did that on a paddle that later cracked I'd suggest taping it off at the edge of the glass, and then trimming the glass with a razor while it is still green. Packing tape should work better than masking tape. Also, that paddle left marks on the deck from rolling, I had painted it with Pettit Easypoxy.
I'm thinking, on the replacement, that I'll just coat the end grain with a couple coats of dookie schmutz, and leave it at that.
