Question on cedar

I've built a few out of cedar and my problem is that they get so dinged up by bridging on a rock or something getting in the kayak.Maybe I have to learn a better balancing act to deserve a cedar paddle. (I'm talking a oil coating). After a while my cedar ones looked like they were 20 years old. I find that pine is a little tougher and still weighs very little.
A few people in CT are making balsa ones. (coated with glass etc.) one guy made a beauty and vacuum bagged a 4 oz cloth. came out great and unbelievabley light and strong.
