: Hi, folks- Getting to build a CLC Chesapeake 16LT for the significant otter,
: and would like to solicit some advice. We're shooting for a weight as
: close to 35lb. as we can get, and are planning to go with their racing
: package (3mm ply for the deck and sides, 4oz. glass). Is this an
: unrealistic weight? If not, how much less durable will the boat be with
: this layup? We're planning to attach the deck without nails; how much can
: we trim off the shear clamps without compromising strength? Any advice
: greatly appreciated.-Greg
Greg, if you eliminate the front bulkhead and hatches, rear hatch (4"beckson in bulkhead), elimate the 3" tape (use cut cloth), glass the underside of the deck for 2ft back behind coaming, cut the yakima footrails in half (if that is what you are using), define the fillets well by masking them, lightly pre-seal the plywood, trim the sheer clamps to 1/8" thick at bottom edge (don't reduce opposing deck edge)you might get there. Don't know why you'd want to though. Going to 3mm deck is the greatest reduction in strength. Use front float bag of course. Given the same manner of construction and materials, messy or neat, lighter/less material is less durable.
