I have even heard of
: one person "flame hardening" the surface but have never heard of
: any details. Before I try that, I would probably just pick a different

Wood lost water and 'harden' when pass over flame. This is believed as how some cavemen hardenned their spear point. A lot of wooden tools have charred tip or sometime the enrire shaft. Charred wood tends to last longer and repells insects ( That may be why they are more plentyful.) But,of course, The cavemen may be using the flamming process to "steam" straighten as well as strengthen their tool.
