i really have minimal idea so follow the other tips but:

i read about running a chainsaw file around the edge for a small cove and glassing in a 3/16 or so braided nylon line. tension protection?

and along these lines and looking at bill prices project x, what about instead of the nylon but using kevlar roving as a protective edging in a similar fashion. probably fairly tough.
