A board foot is the volume in 12" x 12" x 1" thick, so the 1x6 is about two linear feet per board foot.
$1.9 per linear foot is $15.20 for an 8' stick, and that sounds like a lot to me, but if it's clear vertical grain that might not be too bad. Off the cuff, I think you'd need 10 or 12 8' sticks for a boat.
With a 1/8" kerf blade you'll get about 14 strips from a 5.5" wide board ( 5.5" / .375"). Use a thin kerf skilsaw blade on the table saw and you'll gain a little.
I recently picked up 20 pcs of clear western red cedar, 1x4x8' tounge and groove, at a garage sale for $10.00. Once I found enough CVG redwood for several boats out of the nickel ads for $60.00. Then there's all the free stuff I've scrounged, but thats mostly fir.
: I'm trying to plan for the cost of a kayak, something like the Georgian Bay
: or ?
: I am lucky(?) enough to have a place locally that sells only w. red cedar and
: redwood. They have the clear, top grade w.red cedar priced 1 x 6 @ $1.90 a
: linear ft. or 1 x 8 @ 2.56 L.ft. Does that sound competive or steep or?
: I thought I read that the average kayaks took about 50 brd ft.? How does that
: translate to linear ft. (I'm not sure how many strips can be gotten from a
: 1x6 or 1x8? I suppose it all depends on the kerf of the blade?)
: Any ballpark estimates on how many linear feet it might take?
: Similarly, what would the cost be(roughly) to order the strips already cut
: and routed?
: Thanks.
