A board foot is a 1 inch thick board that is 12" wide by 12" long. The dimensions are "nominal" most 1" thick western red cedar is 3/4" or even only 11/16" thick and not all 6" wide boards are a full 6". But if you have a 6" wide board every linear foot is 1/2 of a board foot.

I normally assume about 2 board feet for every foot of length of boat assuming 3/4" thick board and no cove&bead, and then round up. This rule of thumb does not give much extra, but works pretty well for most of my boats. On this basis 50 bdft should be more than enough for most single kayaks.
