I did what you did on my hull--thin precoat, followed by scraping smooth. Great! Then I blew it. I put on the glass, squeegeed it out nicely, and walked away, flush with victory and all anxietied out. After it cured it was wavey. There must have been some draining. Next time I will know to go back in about 15 minutes to squeegee again and then another 15 minutes and to squeegee again.
Your next problem will be how to sharpen scrapers and how to keep your thumbs from getting burned on a scraper hot from friction. Go to Lee Valley Tools and get their scraper holder, variable burnisher and jointer edger. I wish I had gotten them earlier instead of fumbling around with makeshift tools. Your local woodworker store (Woodcraft, Rockler, etc) may stock them .
