Taz or Mark,
That is exactly what I used, Probond. The bubbles seemd to be a problem, if it wasn't clamped good enough, the gap filled with the weak bubbles, when lighly clamped on large surfaces that meet perfectly, this glue seems VERY strong. If it has bubbles in the joint, it is weak.
Yes, that is the Varathane that I used. I got the idea from Chris Cunningham, he used the water-based Varathane floor finish on his Greenland kayak. His had a nice look to it, but he has had some flaking over the years. I have not had any problems with mine yet, but I was pretty retentive about timing when sealing it, my biggest problems were a few runs.
The oil-based stuff is less prone to flaking, but more prone to cracking with age. I liked the look (clear not amber) of the water-based better, so that is what I used.

: I've just used the urethane glue (Probond, i think) on my yak. It requires
: moisture to cure (ie: hydroscopic). I thought that was useful for
: 'steamed' pieces as it wasn't necessary to get them dry to bond. The glue
: is bubbly and expands, but beneath it's skin it appears more like urethane
: foam (ie: weak). Is this the same glue you are using? And why the high
: clamping pressure?
: Also, I wonder about your water-based urethane. If the can says Varathane
: Diamond Finish, that would be an acrylic, slightly milky wet, drys clear,
: very abrasive-resistant. Varathane just ain't urethane anymore. Sort of
: like water-based contact-cement: greenish latex base. Flecto: Reid Paints
: International of England. Or is it something else and how is it standing
: up? taz
