: In the end, how much of a difference does weight (both of kayak and cargo)
: make a difference, and what exactly does it effect?

For a given hull and deck shape, if you can build the boat lighter then you will be able to carry more cargo. If we are talking about an ocean liner then the difference can be dramatic. If we are talking about a kayak, then a 5 to 25 pound difference in boat weight is insignificant in general use.

However, some people can lift a 70 pound canoeor kayak, and some can not. When it comes to portaging such a boat, or loading and unloading it from the car or trailer, then the limit of the boat handler's strength will determine whether the heavier boat can be used solo, or only when there are other paddlers around to assist. If you are planning a solo boat it should not be so large that you cna not handle it in or out of the water by yourself.

Boats for children are obviously in this category. If parents are around at all times to assist, then the kids can certainly paddle larger boats. But if they are doing this with their friends ( scout or church group outings, etc.) then lighter boats are mandatory.

Some special purpose boats are built to extreme measures. Boats designed to be backpacked to distant inland lakes are going to be as light as you can get them. When backpacking the weight is very important. The 10 pound difference between a 17 pound boat and a 27 pound boat can mean the difference between whether you can get the boat to the lake, or not.

If your kayak or canoe is lighter trhen you will be better able to maneuver it and it may not get dinged up as much over its life. Otherwise, a few pounds make little difference.

Hope this helps
