Yeah, but how long did you paddle with him (20 yds?) ;) Runners use racing flats, and do speedwork (aka interval training, aka windsprints), but I run purely for enjoyment. Mostly I do 9 or 10 minute miles, but even recreational stuff sometimes ends up with an inspired day or two where you just wanna see how much you can take.
Now, can he sand at a proportionally fast rate? That would be useful !
