I built a whitewater stripper racing canoe, using 3/16" cedar strips and sheathed inside and out with 4 oz polypropelene cloth and epoxy. Polypro is stronger and more flexible than fiberglass. My boat once got wrapped around a rock until the bottom was above the gunwhale, but I was able to pop it back in shape and paddle home. But polypro is difficult to work with as it can float in the epoxy and fuzzes when sanded so it may not be the choice for you. I'm not sure if it is still available.
